Almoravid Koubba

The Almoravid Koubba is one of the oldest surviving monuments in Marrakech and a rare example of Almoravid architecture. Built in the early 12th century during the reign of Ali ibn Yusuf, it was probably part of the original Ben Youssef Mosque complex and served as a pavilion for ritual ablutions. The monument is especially notable for its carved dome, geometric and vegetal decoration, Arabic inscriptions and early examples of muqarnas ornamentation.

Bab Agnaou

Bab Agnaou is one of the most important historic gates of Marrakech and a major example of Almohad monumental architecture. Built in the late 12th century during the reign of the Almohad caliph Ya'qub al-Mansur, it served as the principal ceremonial entrance to the royal Kasbah. Unlike many defensive gates in the city walls, Bab Agnaou had an important representative and symbolic role. Its stone façade is distinguished by a large horseshoe arch surrounded by carved geometric and vegetal decoration and a Quranic inscription.

Bahia Palace

Bahia Palace is one of Marrakech's most important 19th-century palaces and a major example of Moroccan architecture from the Alaouite period. Construction began under Si Moussa, a powerful grand vizier, and the palace was later greatly expanded by his son Ahmed ben Moussa, known as Ba Ahmed. The complex developed gradually into an extensive residence organized around courtyards, gardens and richly decorated rooms. Its architecture features traditional zellige tilework, carved and painted cedar ceilings, sculpted stucco and marble. The palace reflects the wealth and political influence of Morocco's grand viziers during the late 19th century.

El Badi Palace

El Badi Palace is a monumental Saadian palace in the Kasbah of Marrakech. It was commissioned by Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur following the Saadian victory over Portugal at the Battle of the Three Kings in 1578. Designed as a symbol of royal power and wealth, the palace was built with luxurious materials including marble, carved stucco, cedar wood and imported decorative elements. Its vast central courtyard was organized around a large reflecting pool, gardens and richly decorated pavilions. After the decline of the Saadian dynasty, much of the palace was dismantled under the Alaouite sultan Moulay Ismail and its valuable materials were reused in other royal projects. Today, its monumental ruins preserve the scale and organization of one of the most ambitious palaces of Saadian Morocco.

Jemaa el-Fnaa Square

Jemaa el-Fnaa is the historic main square of Marrakech and one of the city's most important public spaces. Located at the heart of the medina, it has served for centuries as a meeting place, marketplace and stage for public life. During the day, the square hosts merchants, juice stalls and traditional activities, while in the evening it transforms into a lively open-air gathering place filled with food stalls, musicians, performers and storytellers. Jemaa el-Fnaa is especially significant for its living traditions and oral culture, which contributed to its international recognition as intangible cultural heritage.

Koutoubia Mosque

The Koutoubia Mosque is the largest mosque in Marrakech and one of the city's most recognizable monuments. It was established after the Almohad conquest of Marrakech in the 12th century under the caliph Abd al-Mu'min. A second mosque was subsequently constructed beside the first, forming the Koutoubia that survives today. Its celebrated minaret, completed during the reign of Ya'qub al-Mansur, became an influential model for later western Islamic architecture, including the Hassan Tower in Rabat and the Giralda in Seville. The mosque takes its name from the booksellers, or kutubiyyin, who historically occupied the surrounding area.

Saadian Tombs

The Saadian Tombs are a royal necropolis in the Kasbah of Marrakech and one of the city's most important monuments from the Saadian period. The site contains the graves of members of the Saadian dynasty, including Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur and members of his family. Although burials existed here before his reign, Ahmad al-Mansur transformed the necropolis in the late 16th century with richly decorated mausoleums. The complex is renowned for its carved cedar wood, stucco, marble columns, geometric tilework and the celebrated Chamber of the Twelve Columns. After the fall of the Saadian dynasty, the tombs became largely enclosed and were eventually brought to wider modern attention in the early 20th century.
